Holy Trinity Handbell Ringers

The Holy Trinity Handbell Ringers meet regularly on Monday afternoons from 2- 4pm in the Church Meeting Room, which is situated by the church gate. We enjoy playing a variety of music which includes classical pieces, folk tunes and hymns. We play for our own enjoyment and also enjoy performing for various groups throughout the year with a varied programme of music.

Members of the group have been active in promoting handbell ringing in the community over many years and have supported workshops and 'hands on' activities with all ages.

Some of us run an After School Club for handbells at Messingham  School and support the Church Schools Festival at Lincoln Cathedral each year.

We are always happy to give handbell demonstrations and provide workshops for organisations eg WI, children’s organisations etc.

What makes handbell ringing so appealing?

  • A unique sound
  • An all – inclusive activity enjoyed by all ages
  • Enjoy making music with others
  • Good for developing teamwork,  listening skills, rhythm and other musical skills
  • Easily learnt by everyone at their own level ; colour-coded music for young children, number notation, standard musical notation for the more experienced
  • An excellent resource for demonstrating and developing change-ringing skills

How the group was formed

The group was established in the 2002 following the refurbishment of the handbells and augmentation to 17 bells. The ringers originally included tower bell ringers from Messingham and Bottesford and non-ringing friends who were keen to ring the handbells.

The group are now affiliated to the Handbell Ringers of Great Britain

The Bells

The original set of 13 bells, with tenor note A, was presented to the tower bell ringers of Holy Trinity, probably around 1947.

In 2001 these bells were retuned to the scale of G and 4 new bells were cast to create a set of 17 bells.

In 2006, 8 more bells were added to produce a fully chromatic 2 octave set of 25 bells.

Subsequently 2 small bells were added to the set making a total of 27 bells.
