New for Old

I wonder what was in your head when you woke up on New Year’s Day this year? Wish I hadn’t stayed so long at the neighbour’s house last night? Where is the bacon and egg I so desperately need to get me started? When is the mother-in-law coming round for New Year’s lunch- hope she doesn’t stay too long!! It’s strange how the season of Christmas and then New Year brings into focus many of the issues that for the rest of the year we simply sweep under the carpet and hope will just go away. But usually they don’t. Most things we sweep under the carpet simply make the carpet of our lives more lumpy and we then end up falling over the many lumps that have accumulated under it over the year!

But New Year and the onset of January is a special moment. The beginning of a new start- something fresh. How many of us have great successes in our lives, but also wouldn’t mind turning the clock back and having a fresh start with a few things- work, family, relationships etc? Hindsight is a great teacher- and also a really cruel punisher, if we allow it.

But as Christians we can have hope- as the New Year dawns upon us, we can look to He who is the Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the start and end of all things, and know that He offers each of us all a fresh start. Just hear the words of an old prophet, Jeremiah, who was speaking 2500 years ago- but just as relevant today. “The steadfast love of The Lord never ceases, his mercies never come to an end. They are new every morning- great is your faithfulness, O Lord”.

I’m not sure how you view the dawn chorus of the New Year, but I would encourage you to wake every day in January and remind yourself that however bleak the dark days may seem, God’s love is fresh and overflowing to you and every day we awake we can be sure that He will be faithful to us, whatever treasures the year holds in store.
