Covid-19, or even worse?

There was a time when a dear friend of mine, with the best of intentions, said to me: ”If you haven’t heard about digital tv, you must have your head stuck in the sand!”. I guess he was right, but it was a long time ago and well before mainstream HD TV and all things digital were really upon us.

And recently, it must be said that you would have to have your head stuck in the sand if you weren’t aware of all issues about Coronavirus! In fact, as is usually the want of our media, you will probably know as much now as those who have a PhD in the subject of Virology and Immunology, as just about every expert with some title of ‘Professor’ has been wheeled out into their front room to converse over Skype with the local newscaster (are they still called that?)- anyway, I think you get my drift.

But even as I write this, I can’t be sure at what state we will find ourselves in as a country, as the relentless march of a ‘pandemic’ seems to be coming our way, and may have arrived by now.

It’s amazing what effect a virus can have on our ‘security’ and western sense of smugness around our ability to survive and ‘beat all oncomers’. However, we know that there will be some who will suffer serious illness if they catch the virus and many others who will sadly die at its hands.

We are not invincible. Even if our cosseted and modern scientific society would lead us to believe that. We need to be watchful and careful. Something so small can take us out! Some of us permanently.

As we approach the season of Easter, I am also reminded of the disease that has debilitated all of humankind since it’s beginning- that of sin. Not a very popular subject- we’d rather talk about fluffy bunnies and Easter eggs at this time of year, but the truth is that humankind has at its very heart a disease that had infected us all- and one that at Eastertime we rejoice in it’s defeat: when Jesus died, was buried and was raised again to defeat the effects of sin and death upon us all.

“For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through Him”. (John 3:17).

Wow!!! Now that’s something to shout from the rooftops this Easter period. We may have an onslaught of a virus, but we also have someone who has come to announce good news to us all about a greater disease that affects us all. “Where O death is your victory? Where O death is your sting? The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ!” (1 Corinthians 15:55-56).

Happy Easter to you all!
