Holy Trinity Church, Messingham

School and College Visits

We enjoy welcoming learners of all ages. Visits can vary in time and focus and are planned with school/college staff to meet needs.

Visiting groups have so far included Pre-school groups, Reception, KS1, KS2 and groups from North Lindsey College and the Workers Educational Alliance.

Through a recent Heritage Lottery Fund supported restoration project (2016-2018) we were able to work with the staff and children of Messingham Primary School to develop and pilot a range of activities.  A highly productive and enjoyable staff meeting held at the church facilitated identification of a wide range of potential curriculum activities focusing on both heritage and RE. Follow up work with staff, supported by a science consultant and retired educational professionals, enabled the planning and delivery of a wide range of activities.

Following an introductory lesson in school Year 5 and 6 children enjoyed working as 'Church Detectives', looking for evidence of change over the years. They explored the use of materials in the construction of the church and how materials have been affected by time and weather. 'Glass Detectives' explored the unique collection of medieval stained glass. Related science learning back in school included, crystal growth, transfer of moisture through materials, surface tension and the effect of these principles on the condition of materials.

Access to the curriculum resources developed is provided through the following links. The resources are provided as pdfs and word docs to facilitate editing.

Friends in other churches and schools are encouraged to adapt and use the resources to meet local needs.

Please feel free to contact us for any further information and we look forward to any feedback you may provide.

Year 5 children have enjoyed the design and production of visitor welcome leaflets.

Year 6 children have modelled excellent stained glass window designs.

Reception children enjoyed exploring the church building and artefacts and finding out about the bells.  They acted out the story of Palm Sunday as a starting point for their forthcoming Easter performance in school.

Year 1 and 2 explored the church using our family heritage trail, looked at old artefacts, looked for evidence of change and took photographs of things they found interesting.

North Lindsey College art and design students explored the church and contributed to the early stage of development of a graphical style guide to underpin this website, information leaflets and other communications.
